Nelda was born the youngest of eleven (11) children, to Cecilia and Henry McArthur. She grew up on White Bear Indian Reservation, Carlyle, Saskatchewan and attended various boarding schools. She immigrated to the United States where she met and married Stanley Schrupp in the early 70's. In the late 70's, they were blessed with a daughter Erin. After raising Erin to school age, Nelda decided to return to school and in 1990 received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, majoring in Art with a concentration in Ceramics and a minor in Jewelry and Small Sculpture. This was enough metal work to entice her to study this medium in more detail. After taking one summer off, she entered graduate school at the University of North Dakota where she received a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Metalsmithing; Jewelry and Small Sculpture in 1993.
After graduating, Nelda dedicated all her energy to jump-start her career. The first thing on her agenda was to set up a studio, where she began producing her one-of-a-kind Amuletic Forms with Audio Esthetics (wearable and handheld rattles). Immediately she began to make her mark in the art world by winning, at art shows, with her distinctive style. With her career underway, it did not take long for the print media to take notice of her distinctive style. Her works have gone on to be published in numerous books, newspapers, and periodicals such as: Native Peoples Magazine, Indian Artist Magazine, and "North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment" (Prehistory to Present). Nelda's work can be enjoyed by the public at the Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, and on the web site of The National Museum of the American Indian. In 1999 she was honored with the NMAI Art Fellowship. Nelda's work can also be seen at the numerous Art Shows she attends each year.
Her time today is a delicate balance between family, studio time, teaching and traveling to art competitions. Nelda has been invited to be the Juror, at numerous art shows, notably; The Fourteenth Annual Lawrence Indian Arts Show, and 2003 Red Earth Festival in Oklahoma City.
